Description:
This view is from the Turners Falls shoreline to the Riverside, Gill side. The large brown surface item beneath the Upper or "Red" Suspension Bridge (1878-1942) at the right-side of this image, is thought by some to be "Burnham's Rock". The item is actually a boat dock for use by Riverside residents. The view looks to the north.

Description:
Upper or "Red" Suspension Bridge connects Turners Falls with the enclave of Riverside in Gill. Erected in 1878 it remained until 1942 when it was dismantled for its components that could be used for the war effort, (WWII). It was 540-feet long. At normal water levels in the Connecticut River, the deck rose 25-feet above the flow. This east exposure from the Turners Falls shoreline shows an elegant design. The quarried-stone abutments for the bridge exist on both sides of the river.
